◊ 2006-07-24 20:21 | Are you quoting 1/4 mile times?? Most late 1960s - early 1970s muscle cars could do the 1/4 mile at a little over 100 mph. Top speed for most of them was in the 120-140 mph range. Jeeze, my MGB will do 100 mph (if you have the nerve and can stand the noise). |

Also combined are the Trans Am and '71 Firebird vents on the front fenders. so this car could be any of the above. At least we know it's 70-74 because of the flat back window... and for the record in hs my 1978 camaro with a 2 barrel 305 and tired engine (would foul out 2 plugs from bad sealing) with only a set of headers would do over 130 mph with 3 people in the car. The point is these second gens could easily reach tripple digit speeds. Mine was tired and weak and it could do it. |

◊ 2009-05-16 08:59 | Despite this, they still featured large displacement engines all the way through 1979 and put out gobs of torque and are tons of fun to drive. They hit 120 mph with no drama in stock form. Some basic hotrodding (read some cam and decent compression) would have these cars making lots of power with little effort. The mild build I did on my '79 Trans Am's Oldsmobile 403 yielded over 400 hp at the flywheel with a 9.5:1 static compression ratio. The cheap trick for 403's would have been to bolt on a pair of earlier small block heads to instantly get a good compression ratio. Also, with a 6.7 second sprint to 60 mph and 0.83 g avg on the skidpad, a stock Trans Am is a decent performer even today. One can opt to completely revamp the suspension, but better rubber alone will make a world of difference. As I mentioned above, it's not hard to make power with these cars, so they should not be discounted as outdated relics. Though it is really embarassing when Ponch brags about his '71 hitting 60 mph in 8+ seconds in ep 2.13 . . . |

◊ 2012-01-22 20:56 | it appears that it is actually a 1973 formula in many screen shots, it has the recessed grilles and amber signal lenses, bumper laws changed for 73 so the grille was recessed in the bumper and 73 was the only year for the 70-73 cars to have amber lenses, the others were clear with chrome trim over them, it also looks like it has the 73-81 deluxe seats as well and its a formula because it has the fender gills in the right spot but the trans am vents are not recessed into the fender like they would have been on a real trans am fender, years ago i had bolted on a set on firebird fenders the same way. other episode screen shots show that it is a 71 so clearly through the couple years they built a few different versions btw, they can go way faster than 120mph, in my younger stupid days when i had just bought my old 1970 RAIV 400 4 speed trans am i had it up to at least 180mph(had 160 mph speedo and it was way past the 160mph) on hwy 41 here in wisconsin, it started to get a sideways floaty feeling on every crack so i backed out of it, wish i still had that car as there were only 19 built like mine was. -- Last edit: 2012-01-23 05:52:37 |

I got proof from the website Chips Wiki that it's a 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Personal Information Ponch's Firebird is actually a 1971 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 in Anaconda Gold, the car has had three different previous owners prior to Ponch, and suffering many accidents at various stages of undercover work for the CHP. Since the original owner of the firebird is unknown, car was once owned.
