I have previously talked about the first lesson time teaches us. We found that that time doesn’t care about us no matter who we are. This post is about another important lesson time teaches us.

Lesson 2: Time may move slowly, but it always moves forward

Coming back to our time analogy, we can’t help but observed how the second hand on a clock moves. It moves, stops, moves, stops and so on… but it never goes back. It always goes forward. After an hour, the second hand would have made 3,600 little steps. Maybe that’s a lot of steps for such a small amount of progress, but the important lesson here is that it never moved back. Its mean progress is forward.

We live in a world of “one step forward, two steps backward”. We do certain things, achieve certain results, and we are very happy with ourselves. But when we take stock of our lives and analyse a year or so of our lives, we realize that though we may have taken several forward steps, we have taken more steps back. This means that we are worse of than we were before.

It is said that slow and steady wins the race. The keyword here is steady. Steadiness indicates that you must maintain the same pace; not fast today, slow tomorrow. And sometimes it is important that you stop, analyse your next move before making it. That way, you can make a move that won’t lead to backward movements down the line.

“Winning a battle is pointless if it doesn’t lead to victory in the war”

I have read a quote several times, one version is: “he won the battle, but not the war”. This is important as in the end, the future is more important than the present. Sometimes, it may be important to take steps backward as part of your strategy. Going back to our clock analogy, the second hand starts at the 12 position and after a minute, it returns back to the 12 position. This is the king of going back i am talking about. The clock may have gone back to where it started, but going back there ultimately has led to progress. Someone who doesn’t understand will see only the backward movement of the second hand, but not the corresponding forward movement of the minute and hour hands. Certain successes and forward movements do not in anyway lead to your advancement; you may feel a momentary sense of relief, but danger lies ahead. The converse is also the case, certain failures and backward movements may actually lead to progress and advancement. Knowing when to move forward, stop moving, move a step back for clarity is important if you want to have great overall advancement. The key to knowing this is to have a very clear picture of your future, your goals. Having a very clear picture of your goals will enable you plan all the way to the end and you will progress everyday, and what people think is a failure or a backward movement, will actually be a forward movement.
